Credits and licences

Halsem is a free, independent project, and it stands on other people's work. Here is that work, with its licences.

The code

Halsem is built on Tidewater by Dan Greenheck (dgreenheck), released under the MIT licence. Tidewater on GitHub

The clouds are adapted from Sky Pro WebGPU by DRG Software Solutions, published under the same MIT licence by its copyright holder.

Two antialiasing lookup textures come from three.js (MIT), which takes them from the SMAA reference implementation by J. Jimenez et al. (MIT). The site is built with Vite (MIT).

Map data © OpenStreetMap contributors. The shoreline, the buildings, roads, bridges, piers and forest, the place names and the channel buoys come from OpenStreetMap, available under the Open Database Licence (ODbL). OpenStreetMap copyright and licence

The small map of Poland on the home page draws its coast and borders from Natural Earth, which is in the public domain, and its lakes and Masuria from OpenStreetMap.

Fonts

The type is Instrument Serif, by Rodrigo Fuenzalida and Jordan Egstad, and Hanken Grotesk, by Alfredo Marco Pradil and Hanken Design Co. Both are under the SIL Open Font License 1.1, cut down to the letters the site uses and served from Halsem's own server. SIL Open Font License

The signs on the market stalls are lettered with Permanent Marker (Apache 2.0), Cabin Sketch and Oswald (both SIL OFL 1.1).

Sounds

The sounds are 42 field recordings from Freesound, released under CC0 1.0: free to use, with no attribution needed. Freesound · CC0 1.0

The humpback whale is an original model. Its side profile was traced from a NOAA Fisheries illustration, a US government work in the public domain.

The boats are Halsem's own models.

Techniques

The water, sky and light follow published techniques, with no code taken from the papers: J. Tessendorf's ocean spectra, S. Hillaire's atmosphere, the Nubis clouds and the Horizon Forbidden West breaking waves from Guerrilla Games, motion blur and bloom after M. McGuire and J. Jimenez, AMD FidelityFX sharpening, SMAA and FXAA, and the caustics of Evan Wallace's WebGL Water.

Boat names

Halsem is an independent, free fan project. Boat names are used only to identify the real boat types the in-game models are inspired by: Antila 30.1 (Antila Jacht Sp. z o.o., Radom), Maxus 33 (Northman Sp. z o.o., Węgorzewo), Tango 780 Sport (designed by Andrzej Skrzat, built by Stocznia Jachtowa Janmor, Głowno) and Omega Standard (the Polish national class designed by Juliusz Sieradzki).

Halsem is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by these builders, the Omega class association or the Polish Sailing Association (PZŻ).

All names and trademarks belong to their owners, and the boats' handling in the game is a simplified approximation.
