Privacy

Halsem has no accounts, no ads and no cookies. This is what it keeps, and where.

In your browser

The game saves your progress and settings in your browser's local storage: your catch and gear, the last map, boat and start pier, your sailor name, which tips you have seen and your display switches.

For online play, the open tab also keeps a session token, so a dropped connection can rejoin as the same sailor. It goes when you close the tab.

All of this stays on your device. Clearing this site's data in your browser removes it.

Sailing with others

Sailing alone sends nothing about you or your boat.

When you choose to sail with others, the game sends the server the name you typed. Then, about ten times a second, it sends your boat: its type, position and heading, the sails, the rudder and the engine.

The server passes these on to the other sailors on your lake. They see your boat, with your name above it. Anyone who opens the game also sees roughly where each boat on the lake is, as a dot on the start map, with no name or boat type.

Names are checked against a list of offensive words in English and Polish and refused if one matches. The server keeps your name and boat in memory only while you sail, and for 30 seconds after a dropped connection, so you can rejoin. It does not write them to disk or to its logs.

It also uses your IP address, in memory, to limit how many connections one address can open and to block abuse.

Hosting

The site and the game server run on Fly.io, in its Frankfurt region. Like most web hosts, Fly keeps standard request logs, which include IP addresses.

Visit counts

Visits are counted with Umami, an open-source analytics tool that Halsem runs itself, at brt-umami.fly.dev. It sets no cookies and does not follow you to other sites.

It counts page views and these events:

play-click
a click on a Play link, and where on the page it was
lang-switch
a switch between English and Polish
wiki-click
a click on a Wikipedia link, and which one
link-copied
the game's link copied on a phone
map-place
a place picked on the map, and which one
map-sail
a start link on the map, and which pier
phone-screen
the game opened on a phone
continue-anyway
"Play anyway" chosen on a phone
gpu-gate
the game unable to start, with the reason and, when the graphics card falls short, its maker and family

Most events from the landing and map pages also carry the page's language. There are no ads, no third-party trackers, and nothing is sold or shared.
